January 4, 2015 (Sunday) – First practice in 2015.
Michael Moscoso Sensei of the New York City Kendo Club, whom some of you already met at the recent Austin Longhorn Kendo Team Taikai, will be joining us in our kendo practice this Thursday. Moscoso sensei is an ordained Zen buddhist monk with a new name of “賢道”, which is pronounced as “kendo”.
Our dojo has been invited to perform an Iaido and Kendo enbu at The Crow Collection of Asian Art this Friday night at 7:30pm and 8:30pm. This enbu is part of the Crow Collection After Dark – Samurai Complete at Crow Collection of Asian Art program on October 17 from 6pm to midnight.
Since October 17 is the 3rd Friday of the month, Dallas Museum of Art is having its usual monthly Late Night event when all adjacent museums (DMA, Nasher Sculpture Center, and Crow Collection of Asian Art) are open until MIDNIGHT. General admission to all three museums is FREE.

Late Night at DMA is usually very popular. DMA underground parking ($10, free for members) fills up very quickly. Nearby street meter parking is free after 6pm. Open lot or office building parking is available around $5-$15 and you need to walk a few blocks. Details can be found in the above link. Also DART Arts District station is a few blocks away.

Congratulations to the Southern California Kendo Organization team (Yuma Kato, Gaku Sasaki, Keita Yada, Sayaka Sugeta and Shota Sugeta) for winning the 3rd place.

Most of our dojo members will be in Austin for the Longhorn Taikai this weekend, so there is no practice this Sunday October 12, 2014. Enjoy a peaceful weekend!
On Tuesday November 4, 2014, our dojo will be hosting a guest sensei from Japan: Takeshi Ishii（石井 猛) Sensei, Hachidan Kyoshi, Tokyo Metropolitan Police Shihan.
Practice starts promptly at 7:15pm. Please come to the dojo at least 15 to 20 minutes earlier to get ready.
Next Tuesday,September 23 and the following Tuesday, September 30, the dojo is going to have Advanced Kendo practice ONLY.

The SWKIF Fall Seminar and Shinsa will be held in Tucson, AZ on October 24-26.
The testing will be for ranks up to and including ShoDan. Please consult with Ichimura Sensei & get his signature, and submit all forms, menjos and 2 checks to Cooper Sensei before October 7, 2014.

The 13th Annual Longhorn Invitational Team Kendo Taikai is set for Saturday, October 11, 2014, in Austin.
Registration deadline is Monday, September 15!
It’s that time again for the Fall AUSKF/SWKIF Membership Drive.
Anyone who wishes to test or attend any seminars hosted by AUSKF or SWKIF needs to be a member. For those who already signed up during the Spring Membership Drive, you don’t have to worry about it.
The form is attached and you must fill it out completely. If you need your AUSKF Membership Number we will provide it to you. You can pay by Check or use our dojo’s online payments page. Turn in your completed form, check or Paypal receipt to Ashley or Simon.
The Due Date will be September 9th, 2014.

Due to the annual refinishing of the gym floors at Greenhill School, we will be taking one week of summer break starting Sunday July 27. Practice will resume the following Tuesday on August 5.

This year’s pool party will be held on Saturday, August 16, from 3pm to 7pm. Al and Lucy are kindly hosting the party at their house. Due to privacy reasons, the address will be announced in the dojo only.
DFWKIK will be hosting a Taikai Practice for the SWKIF Team Members, who will be competing in San Diego CA for the AUSKF Nationals, on June 14th and 15th. Due to the special practices, there will be no regular iaido and kendo practice on Sunday, June 15.
The DFWKIK will be hosting the 2014 AUSKF Zone 6 Shinpan Seminar on May 3-4. For members with kendo rank of sandan and above are highly encouraged to attend, and it will be a good learning experience for those who are nidan and below. There will be no fee to attend the two day seminar, however you can pre-order the lunch ($12/each per day) and banquet dinner ($30/person). If you are interested in attending, please see Yong Cho at practice for the registration form. The dojo deadline will be April 13.
This year’s Ito cup will be held May 17, 2014. Members who will be participating must fill out the following waiver form (page 6). Liability forms should be turned in at class before the deadline.

Please find attached the registration document and written exam for the Promotional Exam to be held in Denver on Sunday, May 18th. If you plan to attend and take the exam:
1) Discuss it with Ichimura Sensei
2) Attain his signature
3) Compile all the forms and two checks

The deadline for DFWKIK members to turn in their forms to David Cooper sensei is Sunday, April 27th. No late applications will be taken, so please don’t wait until the last minute.

The two parking lots of Green Hill High School will be closed from 3/10 to 3/15 for restriping. Parking for Tuesday (3/11) and Thursday (3/13) will be affected. However, two parking lots will not be closed at the same time.Whenever one is closed, the other is open. Please see the detail of closure listed below.

For all members of DFWKIK, please complete the attached form and return it, along with either a check payable to DFWKIK or a receipt of your online payment, to Alison or Simon before Sunday, March 9th. Please note that if you had submitted a membership form last fall, you will still need to submit this membership form. In addition, there is an $5 initiation fee for the NEW members.
While it is not a requirement for DFWKIK members to join the SWKIF or AUSKF, we highly encourage it in order to support regional and national activities and insurance coverage. If you plan to attend a regional or national event (seminar, tournament, or promotional exam), it is required to be a member of the SWKIF and AUSKF.
